Madeira strengthens marine area protection through international partnership
Through Resolution no. 272/2026, the Regional Government of Madeira has authorized the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with the Oceano Azul Foundation, ARDITI, and the National Geographic Society's Pristine Seas program. The objective is active cooperation in the assessment and strengthening of the Region's Marine Protected Areas (MPA) Network.
This partnership aims to:
- Implement an Action Program for the conservation of marine biodiversity.
- Align regional management with the international "30x30" commitment (protecting 30% of marine zones).
- Reconcile ecosystem conservation with the sustainability of artisanal fishing and the blue economy.
The initiative reinforces Madeira's pioneering role in ocean management, at a time when the region is assuming increased responsibilities under the OSPAR Convention.
