Regional Government praises five sporting achievements of Madeiran athletes and clubs
The Regional Government of Madeira has approved a set of five public praise resolutions, recognizing the prestige brought to the Region by athletes and sports entities. The distinctions, approved in plenary on May 21, 2026, are as follows:
- Clube Naval do Funchal, athletes, and the Madeira Regional Canoeing Association, for winning the Portuguese Sea Canoeing Cup (Resolution no. 507/2026).
- António Edgar Martins Freitas (athlete), Clube Desportivo e Recreativo Santanense, and the Madeira Skating Association, for winning the National Speed Skating Champion title in the 200-meter pursuit event (Resolution no. 508/2026).
- António Maria Neves Ribeiro and Marco Alexandre Correia Gomes (athletes), coaches, Centro de Treino Mar dos Escuteiros Marítimos, and the Madeira Regional Canoeing Association, for the silver medal at the 1st Stage of the 2026 ICF Ocean Racing World Cup, SS2 class (Resolution no. 509/2026).
- Afonso Henrique Pestana Silva (athlete), Clube Desportivo e Recreativo dos Prazeres, and the Madeira Skating Association, for winning the National Speed Skating Champion title in the 1000-meter sprint event (Resolution no. 510/2026).
- Sofia Maria Silva Ferreira (athlete), from Sport Lisboa e Benfica, for winning the National Handball Champion title in the 2025/2026 1st Division (Resolution no. 511/2026).
